Memorial Service for Andree "Andy" Monson

Andree “Andy” Monson, Age 94 of New Hope, MN passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Andy grew up alongside his two sisters, Yvonne and Karen, in Minneapolis, MN. He sold newspapers in downtown Minneapolis as a young boy, was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church, and graduated from South High in 1949.

Following graduation Andy joined the United States Air Force. He served his country honorably as a member of the 25th Squadron of the 51st Air Defense Wing in the Korean War. His position as a ground crew chief and bomb specialist for the fighter jets was vital to their operations and successes. Though humble about his time in the service, Andy loved sharing stories with fellow veterans.

Andy returned from the service and enrolled at The MN School of Business, where he earned an associate’s degree. Much of his career was spent working for Vend-a-Copy, where he called on the nation’s largest public libraries and universities.

A natural storyteller, Andy always had something to add to the conversation. He talked about saving his newspaper earnings to attend the latest cinema, and how one rainy day he accepted a ride home from a man in a limousine who admired the kid for working hard selling papers in the rain. (Imagine the family’s reaction when Andy was dropped off by Kid Cann!) He also loved telling of his extensive travels through the United States, Mexico and Europe, and friends he made along the way.

“Uncle Andy” was an award-winning photographer, great cook and a mediocre golfer. As a member of the Minnetonka Camera Club for many years, he enjoyed competitions, outings with friends to the North Shore and the Bayfield Applefest, and workshops at local gardens. Andy also enjoyed cooking. He made a marvelous spaghetti sauce and would often make it in buckets to give to friends and family. Golf was a different story. His math wasn’t great and the sun wasn’t kind to the red-head from Minneapolis, but the guy would walk 18 holes with the best of them, “for the exercise”, and he’d still leave with a smile on his face.

Andy’s family would like to thank the doctors at the VA for their many years of expert health care, as well as the wonderful care provided by the North Memorial Hospice team, VA Hospice team, and Woodlake at New Hope staff. Additional thanks to Andy’s VA volunteer visitor, Zach, also Frank Ansong and the numerous other friends and staff members of North Park Plaza/Volunteers of America where he lived the past 25 years. Your kindness toward Andy is appreciated more than words can express.

Andy is survived by his sister, Karen Worth; nieces Kathy Youker, Charlene (Mark) Deisting, and nephew Bryan (Cathy) Worth and many extended family members, loved ones and friends. Preceded in death by parents, Bethel and Andree Monson; sister & brother-in-law, Yvonne and Bill Youker; and niece, Lynn Arco.

Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM Friday, July 10th, at Gearty-Delmore Chapel, 3888 W. Broadway Ave., Robbinsdale 55422. Visitation 1 hour prior at the funeral home and luncheon to follow at 12:30 at North Park Plaza, 8201 45th Ave. N., New Hope, MN. Private interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
