Listen to Obituary

Arlene Joyce Scherber (Johnson) gained her angel wings on October 29, 2025, while holding the hand of her beloved husband, Jerome, of 67 years. She was closely surrounded by her doting family, enveloped in the love she had cultivated throughout her life.

Arlene was born on January 10, 1936, in Two Harbors, MN, to Helmer and Mabel (Patrick) Johnson. After graduating from McGregor High School in 1954, she bravely moved to Minneapolis, where she worked various jobs while earning her Lab Technician License from a local school.

Arlene met Jerome Scherber at a local dance hall, and following their marriage on September 20, 1958, they raised six beautiful children in Minneapolis. Arlene was known for her unwavering kindness and generosity, always making everyone feel welcome in her home. She had an open-door policy for anyone in need-whether it was a shoulder to cry on in the middle of the night, a home away from home, or a comforting, home-cooked meal.

During her more than 30 years as a Family Day Care Provider in her home, Arlene became a mother and grandmother to countless others. She was also a dedicated Board member for the Minnesota Day Care Association, teaching numerous providers with her class "Raising Your Own Children in Day Care." In addition to her caregiving, Arlene continued her Lab Tech work at a NE Minneapolis clinic on Thursday evenings for many years, balancing her professional and personal commitments with grace.

Sewing was Arlene's lifelong passion, beginning at an early age on the family farm in Tamarack, MN. She continued sewing throughout her life, crafting clothes for her extended family and, later, quilts for loved ones and those in need. Remarkably, she completed her final stitches just four days before her passing, a testament to her enduring spirit and love for others.

In retirement, Arlene continued her legacy of service through her involvement with St. Austin's and later St. Bridget's Churches, always seeking ways to give back to her community and support those around her.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Robert, John, and Ralph; and sister, Marilyn (Kenneth) Tvedt.

She is survived by her husband, Jerome; her children, David, Kevin (Lynette), Ronald (Heather Helton), Suzanne (Mark LaLond), Barbara (Daniel Marquardsen), and Melissa (Steven Jordan); 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many other beloved family and friends.
