Bruce David Thompson, age 77, of Plymouth, MN, passed away on March 19, 2026. Bruce was born July 30, 1948, in Rochester, MN, to Albert and Frances (Fox) Thompson. He graduated from John Marshall High School in Rochester in 1966 and attended Rochester Junior College and the University of Minnesota. He married Marilyn Schultz, on June 9, 1969 - they had met in high school math class, and he started doodling in her textbook. They had one daughter, Jessica.
Bruce worked in Public Works for the City of Fridley and the City of Plymouth before beginning a 38-year career in the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department of Hennepin County. He had an avid interest in computers and became the de facto “IT guy” both at work and for family and friends. He loved photography; he took photos for the Rochester Junior College yearbook and ran a photography business on the side with a friend as a student. He belonged to a bowling league for years and kept up weekly golf games until recently. Bruce loved driving, whether racing in his younger years, as a fearless instructor for his daughter as a teenager, or on long road trips. He developed an interest in classical music through his daughter, a professional violist, and was a regular attendee at St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Schubert Club concerts, and he was a dedicated “groupie” of his daughter’s string quartet, the Daedalus Quartet, traveling to any concert they performed within driving distance (and sometimes beyond). On summer weekends, he and Marilyn could often be found enjoying Minneapolis Pops concerts at Lake Harriet. Bruce was also a loving grandfather to his two grandsons, with whom he shared a love of baseball, tech, trivia, and corny jokes. He had the ability to have a conversation with anyone, and he was quick to volunteer his time to help others.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Keith Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughter, Jessica; son-in-law, Evan Bialostozky; grandsons, Samuel and Isaac Bialostozky; sister Deanna Sanden; brother Jeff Thompson; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 28 at 11am at Oak Knoll Lutheran Church, 600 Hopkins Crossroad, Minnetonka, MN 55305, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
