Listen to Obituary

David Erik Penn, of Prior Lake, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly on March 31, 2026.

David was born on January 21, 1974, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, to John and Miriam (Fjelland) Penn. He graduated from Mayer Lutheran High School in 1992 and went on to attend Concordia University in St. Paul, where he studied business, played football, served as student body president, and formed lifelong friendships.

It was at Concordia that David met the love of his life, Charlotte Ross. They were married on January 8, 2000, beginning a life rooted in shared values and a generosity of spirit that touched many. Over 26 years, they shared their faith, a spirit of adventure through travel, and a deep, enduring partnership.

Throughout his life, David faced a number of health challenges and Charlotte lived their vows of “in sickness and in health” with unwavering love and care. These experiences deepened his belief in living fully, focusing on what matters most and doing what you love.

Hospitality was central to who David was. When he had the opportunity to purchase the Minnesota Horse and Hunt Club, he embraced it wholeheartedly, often working seven days a week to create a special experience for members and the surrounding community. He was deeply committed to preserving the time-honored tradition of hunting and ensuring it was passed on responsibly to future generations, always with respect for the sport. David was always known for his generosity, his passion for the Club, and his genuine care for others.

He was happiest walking the fields with his faithful canine companions: Rolo, Tomo, Oslo and Scoop, or sharing stories and great food with dear friends, many of whom began as employees and became like family.

One of David’s greatest joys was his relationship with his nephews, Jacob and Brandon, whom he loved as his own. He delighted in taking them to sporting events, coaching them in flag football at Redeemer Christian Academy, teaching them how to hunt for antler sheds, and showing them the value of hard work, often through opportunities at the Club.

David will be laid to rest with his parents in Clark, South Dakota, a place that held deep meaning for him. It was there, on his family's farmland, that he grew up hunting alongside his father, brother, uncles and cousins—experiences that shaped his love for the outdoors, family traditions, and responsible stewardship. Those early memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mim Penn. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Penn; brother Timothy Penn (Erica); sister Anna Penn; in-laws Kurt and Carol Ross, brother-in-law Kyle Ross (Tina); sisters-in-law Kay (Jeff) Whaley, Leah Zbacnik (Derikk) and beloved nephews Jacob and Brandon, extended family and many close friends.

David was a man of integrity, kindness and compassion. A natural leader, he viewed the world with optimism and possibility. Above all, he will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving uncle, a generous host and a trusted friend.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at the Minnesota Horse and Hunt Club in Prior Lake, Minnesota, at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, followed by a reception featuring some of David’s favorite foods and Arnie Palmers.

Interment will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 17 at the Clark Center Cemetery in Clark, South Dakota.
