David Allen Smith

David A. Smith, age 84, of Medina, MN passed away peacefully on Monday August 17, 2026. He was born on May 17, 1942, and raised by his parents Henrietta and Raphael Smith in East Grand Forks, MN. He graduated from Sacred Heart HS, where he played football and basketball. He attended the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux earning a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Dave married Dar Stocker at Sacred Heart Church on August 29, 1964. Together they relocated to the Minneapolis area, and he began his career in the computer industry at Control Data where he worked for 30 years including a short stint in California. In his later working years, he owned a DQ franchise and was a school bus driver. 

Dave was a loving husband and father who enjoyed tennis, running, coaching youth sports, and cheering on his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling across the world including a 6-week family trip to Europe in a VW van. Finally, he was very committed to his community and faith serving many roles in the community, school and at his parish.  

He is survived by his wife Dar and three children:

· Jeff (Susan) Smith: Charlotte; Hannah (Andrew) Vassil, Patrick, Helen; Porter; Hermena, Djeneva, Abriana, Amelinda, Alex, Kaley, Nayeli, Cristian, Gabriel, Kevin, Andy

· Steve (Lynn) Smith: Katie (Alex) Wilson, Nora; Michael, Megan

· Amy (James) Fornshell: Lauren, Shannon, Natalie

Dave is also survived by sister Joanne (Ronald) Groff and brother Steven (Stephanie) Smith.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents Henrietta and Raphael Smith, brother John Smith, sister Delores, son Joseph Smith, and granddaughters Julia Fornshell, Isabella Fornshell, Ashlyn Smith.

A funeral mass to celebrate Dave's life will be held at 11 am on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Holy Name of Jesus in Medina, MN. Family and friends are invited to visit with the family at the church beginning at 10 am. Memorials preferred to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Heart Foundation.
