Dawn M. Smith, 59, of Blaine, MN passed away suddenly on October 6, 2026 at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, MN.
Dawn was born in Michigan City, IN to Brian Wilkie and Barbara (Scurlock) Gorbonosenko and was the second of three children. The family later moved to Las Vegas, NV which is where Dawn attended high school. Dawn also lived in Nappanee, MI working various jobs in both Michigan and Nevada.
In 2003, Dawn moved to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and soon thereafter began full-time care of her friend, Christian. A few years previous to this, Christian had been left as a quadriplegic following an auto accident. Dawn selflessly devoted herself to his care, learning and growing her caretaking skills beyond many of those who were professionally trained. Christian thrived under her care. These two friends weathered all the ups and downs of life together for 23 years. The world has never seen a greater team.
Dawn enjoyed cooking, feeding the birds, online gaming, and creating beautiful spaces at home.
Few people possess the considerate, selfless and loving heart that was Dawn's. Even fewer are willing to devote so much of themselves to helping another. Her family and friends have been so blessed by her kind ways, loving spirit, and the frequent laughter shared with her. She will be greatly missed.
Dawn is survived by her mother Barbara Gorbonosenko; siblings Scott and Christopher; friend Christian Hatleli; nieces and nephews Maegen, Ashley, Christopher, Liam and Morrigan; and her beloved pets Nikki, Cooper and KT.
She was preceded in death by her father Brian Wilkie.
A funeral service to honor Dawn will be held on Monday, October 19th at Gearty-Delmore Robbinsdale Chapel and will be officiated by Dawn's brother, Scott. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM, Memorial service at 2:00 PM. Luncheon to follow.
