Ethel Adeline (Taraldsen) Wolff

Ethel Adeline Taraldsen Wolff (94) met her Lord and Savior on April 5, 2022.

Ethel was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, William W. Wolff, and her daughter, Julie Wolff.  She is survived by her children, Linda Wolff Dunn, William Wolff, Jr., Patricia Swehosky (Dan), and Thomas Wolff, as well as 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Ethel was born in Duluth, MN on August 30, 1927, the third daughter of Augusta Nordin and Berger John Taraldsen.   She graduated from Denfield High School in 1945.  After graduation she worked as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell in Duluth, where she met the love of her life, Bill Wolff, a lineman.  They met on a picket line protesting work conditions in 1947 and were married on February 14, 1948.  After their second daughter was born, they moved to Robbinsdale for a short time until they built their home in Crystal, where they lived for the remainder of their lives.

Ethel was a stay-at-home mom and the ultimate cook.  Perfect pies were her specialty and the ability to produce a 5-course meal for her husband and five children at precisely 6 p.m. every evening.  Ethel was the “Birthday Queen”.  She kept a birthday book documenting the birthdays of 5 generations of relatives in both the Wolff and Taraldsen families.  Amazingly, she sent a card to everyone in her birthday book in time for each person’s birthday.  At first, she bought all the cards, but when computers became popular, she learned how to make the cards herself.  Every week she was sending cards all over the country.

Ethel loved to travel.  She especially loved spending the winter months in Florence, Arizona with other relatives and friends.  Camping trips to all parts of the country were a joy for her.  When her grandchildren were born, she enjoyed trips to Oregon and North Carolina to spend time with the grandchildren there.  A trip to Norway with her sisters, was a highlight of her life, as well as trips to Germany and Israel.

She and Bill joined Brunswick United Methodist Church in its founding year and were very active attending every Sunday until later years when she could not drive.  She sang in the choir, worked on an inventory team, and served meals for Loaves and Fishes.

Ethel was a quiet introvert but had a great impact on the lives of all of us.  She provided that stable, orderly home we all returned to for comfort.  She will be remembered for her great meals, her birthday cards, her quiet support, and caring deeds.  She will be missed greatly by her loved ones.
