Grace (Ann) Irene Hinnenthal, loving wife, mother, and grandmother died on July 5, 2026, at the age of 86. She was born on November 26, 1939, in Rosemount, Minnesota. She was the daughter of the Reverend Herman and Dorothy (Henningsen) Hagemeister.
In her early years she lived in Rosemount on her father’s farm which is now part of the Minnesota Zoo. When her father changed occupations thereby becoming a member of clergy, the family moved to New Ulm, MN where she spent most of her childhood and teen years. She was an excellent athlete but was also known as the young soloist with a beautiful voice at her father’s church.
Upon graduation from high school, she worked for a short period at The Federated Insurance Company and then enrolled at the University of Minnesota.
Ann had a career in the mortgage banking business. She began as a secretary to the loan administrator at Schumacher Mortgage Company. Her accounting skills took her to the closing department, where her responsibilities included preparing mortgage notes, deeds and other closing documents. She was working in this capacity when she met her future husband, Thomas Hinnenthal, as she frequently had to bring mortgage documents to Northwestern National Bank where Tom worked as a Loan Officer and provided the necessary loan approvals. Ann rose through the ranks and by the time she left Schumacher she was working as the Corporate Secretary.
Ann and Tom married in 1968; a family soon followed. Once her children were in school, Ann pursued her continuing interest in education. She volunteered in the Wayzata School System as a library helper, OWL volunteer, and Junior Great Books leader. She also tutored elementary and junior high students in math and English, and served as a High School resource volunteer. In her mid-50s, she returned to St. Catherine University to complete her English degree, graduating on the same afternoon as her son Mark graduated from St. Olaf College.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years Tom, daughters, Lynn (John) Hillman and Jill (David) Hand, and son Mark (Jennifer). She is further survived by grandchildren Jack (Lindsey), Matthew, and Thomas Hillman; Sidney (Jacob) Ilacqua and Riley Hand; and Olivia and Henry Hinnenthal, as well as brothers James and David. She was preceded in death by her parents, the Reverend Herman and Dorothy Hagemeister, brothers Paul and John, and sister Ruth.
