Henry P. Scaia, age 94, of New Hope, passed away from pneumonia in the Palliative Care Unit of North Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Nov.6, 2016.
Henry was born in Chisholm, MN in 1922. He served in the US Army in Korea during WWII, then resumed his education at St. Cloud Teacher’s College and U of ND. He married Katherine Gawreluk in 1950, which he always considered one of his smartest decisions. They started their married lives teaching in Newberry and Escanaba, MI, then Brainerd, MN, and finally joined the rapidly growing Robbinsdale School District 281. He took great pride serving as an elementary principal at Forest, Sonnesyn, and New Hope schools, and treasured the wonderful staffs, students, and parents he worked with. He retired in 1986.
Henry welcomed and reached out to people of all ages and cultures. He was loved and respected, and was a wonderful role model for his family. He gave generously of his time to North Hennepin Kiwanis, as a founding member and leader of Church of the Epiphany, and to family and friends.
He is preceded in death by daughter, Andrea, brother, Virgil, and parents, Peter and Mary.
Henry is survived by Kay, wife of 66 years; children, Pamela Scaia (Eduardo De Anda), Rebecca Boyd (Don) and Philip Scaia (Barbara Del Caro Scaia); grandchildren, Nicolas De Anda-Scaia, Moira De Anda-Scaia, Noah Peter (Christina) De Anda-Scaia, Magaly De Anda-Scaia, Misha Quentin De Anda-Scaia, Natasha De Anda-Scaia, Garrett (Jessica) Boyd, Logan (Christie) Boyd, and Trevor Del Caro Crom; one great-grandchild and one on the way.
