James L. Cardinal

James L. Cardinal, age 89 of Hopkins, MN, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025. Jim was born December 30, 1935 in Buffalo, NY.

He is survived by wife of 61 years, LaVerne; children, Jean (Brian) Steckling, Kathleen (Brian) Scovil, Ann (Kingsley) Ondich, Dr. Gregory (Erin) Cardinal, Melissa (Matt) Poniatowski; 8 grandchildren, Eric (Rachel) and Joey (Trysta) Steckling, Paige (Jake) Keefer, John (Chloe) and Nicholas (Anja) Scovil, Jacob, Sydney, and Henry Poniatowski; 7 great grandchildren, Payton, Lexi, Ally, Will, Jack, Olivia, baby girl due 2026; sister, Helene Hanson; other relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Mathilda Cardinal; sisters, Ora (Don) Newhall, Rosalie Cardinal and brother, Lawrence Cardinal.

First and foremost, Jim was a life-long devoted Catholic. He was a good man, husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa. Jim had a successful career in financial planning and insurance. He had a lifetime love for reading, sunny days, music, travel, Arizona and the outdoors. He followed all types of sports, was an avid walker and cyclist and always tried his darndest to get the golf ball into the air for at least a couple yards.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 11, 5-7 PM at Gearty-Delmore Park Chapel, 3960 Wooddale Ave. S. and Friday ½ hour prior to mass at the church. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, September 12 at 10 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 5900 W. Lake Street. Interment Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
