James O. Rennie
November 13, 1936 — March 2, 2026
James O’Donnell Rennie, a loving presence to so many, departed this life on March 2nd, 2026. He lived his life to his final days with a radiant smile, laughter and a heart filled with gratitude and faith.
Known affectionately as “Papa” to many, James embodied family and love in their truest forms. He was steady, generous, and unwaveringly present. He carried strength with quiet grace, met life’s challenges with courage, and always found room for laughter, even on the hardest days. Papa put his family and friends first, faced life with remarkable resilience, and will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
Born on November 13th, 1936, in Edinburgh, Scotland, James was the eldest of three children born to James and Eileen Rennie. As a young Scotsman, he loved playing football (soccer) with friends and worked diligently as an apprentice to help support his family. At just 21 years old, James took the risk of a lifetime, leaving Scotland by himself in pursuit of opportunity and a better life in the United States. He arrived in Chicago, Illinois, in November 1957, beginning what would become a proud American journey.
Shortly after his arrival, James enlisted in the United States Army, where he served honorably. Following his military service, he began a long and dedicated professional career marked by perseverance, integrity, and hard work.
In time, James met the love of his life, Mary Beth Clancy, a proud Irish American from Chicago, IL. They shared a devoted marriage until Mary’s passing in 2006. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, love, and family, raising three children and creating countless cherished memories.
Without the benefit of a college education, James exemplified determination and humility, working his way into senior corporate leadership roles with International Harvester (IH) and Cummins Inc. His career reflected his values—discipline, loyalty, and a tireless work ethic—qualities that also defined his life outside of work.
Beyond his career, James found joy in the simple and meaningful rhythms of daily life: staying closely connected to family and friends, regular coffee meetups, and being a constant presence for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. He took special pride in attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and never missed an opportunity to offer encouragement, wisdom, or a warm phone call.
James was a devoted husband to the late Mary Beth (née Clancy); a loving father to James (Rose), Lisa, and Greg (Quinn); and a proud Papa to Brooks (Kathleen), Brendan (Kenzie), Colleen, and Patrick. He was a cherished great-grandfather to Margaret.
He is preceded in his passing by his wife, Mary Beth; parents James and Eileen Rennie; siblings Anthony (Joy) Rennie and Eileen (Johnny Johnston).
James was deeply loved and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, at Holy Name of Jesus, 155 County Road 24, Wayzata, MN 55391, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
