Jennie Haataja (Makinen), age 93 years 51 days, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2022, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Mom was diagnosed in May with abdominal sarcoma. She lived in north Minneapolis for almost 67 years and moved to the Homestead in Anoka in July 2022.  She enjoyed living there so much. Mom was born on September 2, 1929, to Henry and Jennie Waldena (Makinen) near Park Rapids, MN, the fourth of six children. She came to the cities and graduated from Vocational Tech Institute in 1951 as an LPN. Nursing was her passion, and she started private duty in 1969. She loved the one-on-one care she was able to provide for her patients, and she continued to care for others into her early 90s. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, traveling, reading and, most of all, using the word “awesome.” Mom is predeceased by her husband Rudy in 1994; son Duane in 2021; her parents; and siblings Nestor, Edwin, Ellen Honga, and Martha Younker.  Survived by daughter Doris (Dan) Hanson; son Timothy (Judy) Haataja; grandchildren Alanna, Adam (Gina), Denise, Amy (Bruce), Paul, and Andrea (Ryan); great-grandchildren Davion, Kallie, Silas, Olivia, Danny, and Liam; great-great-grandson Kashrael; brother Emil (Jean), sister-in-law Karen Jonas, and sister- and brother-in-law Fred and Thelma Halonen; many nieces and nephews; and dear friends. Mom was a believer in Jesus Christ and had no fear of death, she knew where she was going. She is now resting in peace.

Services to be held Friday, Oct. 28, at Gearty-Delmore Funeral Chapel, 3888 W. Broadway, Robbinsdale.   Visitation begins at 1 pm and the funeral at 2 pm. If you would like to join in wearing her favorite color, purple, as we celebrate her life, please do so. Burial is Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1 pm at Balmi Cemetery, north of Wolf Lake, MN.
