Listen to Obituary

John Gimmestad, age 61, of Plymouth, Minnesota, passed away on June 10, 2026 after a long battle with ALS and Frontotemporal Dementia. He was born to Melvin and Luella Jean Gimmestad in Mound, Minnesota.

John was a dedicated father, husband, son, friend and coach. He was married to his wife Gwen for 33 years and had two daughters. He always encouraged them to believe they could achieve anything in life if they just 'be you'. He grew up in Mound with dear friends Kenny Weiland and Tim Sand. In adulthood he still spent summers with his family and friends on Lake Minnetonka. He loved playing and coaching softball, during which he touched the lives of many young athletes and made lifelong friends. He was an avid Minnesota sports fan, golfer, and bowler, bowling an 834 series with a perfect game. In his last days, his wife Gwen was a dedicated caretaker and his pups, kids and music brought him great comfort.

He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Gimmestad; brother-in-law, Steve Scott; and father-in-law, Jerry Gehrke.

John is survived by his mother, Luella Jean; wife, Gwen; children, Lauren Gimmestad (Reed Larson) and Anna Gimmestad (Kerri Sackowitz); sisters, Nancy Kaufman (Greg), Linda Scott, and Ann Allen (Jeff); mother-in-law, Nancy Gehrke; brothers-in-law, Steve Gehrke and Matt Gehrke (Jodi); and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to The ALS Association or The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration.

Celebration of life is being planned for later this summer.
