Lois A. Newell,
age 82, of Minneapolis, has been reunited in death with her beloved husband George. Born in Chambersburg, PA on November 18, 1943, she died at home, as was her wish, on April 23, 2026.
Preceded in death by parents Albert G. and Mary G. of North Olmsted, OH. Survived by her daughters Dianna, Minneapolis; Suzanna (Pedro), St. Paul; grandchildren Luke and Alexandra.
Lois was a graduate of The Catholic High School of Baltimore, MD and Shippensburg University, PA where she earned a BS in Elementary Ed, going on to a career in teaching from which she retired in 1995. She married George on July 1, 1967 at Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Baltimore, MD and then moved back to his home state of MN. The couple purchased their first home in Minneapolis, and became members of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in 1968. A proud granddaughter, daughter and spouse of US military veterans, she was a lifelong member of the VFW and DAV. She spoke fondly of her Italian and Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, loved the color yellow and Mickey Mouse, played 500 and Bingo, listened to Joan Baez and classical music, did word searches , participated in high school and college debate teams and in the Girls Scouts of America organization. She was an avid reader, finishing 118 books in 2025. A devout animal lover and letter writer, she could often be found with a cat on her lap and a pen in hand. Some of her favorite memories were with her pen pal Christine of the UK, friends Mary, Glen Burnie, MD, Elaine, Carlisle, PA and the Minneapolis ladies Sharon Susan and Marie. A faithful believer in the power of prayer, she encouraged her family to practice support of the poor as did Pope Francis and the teaching of St Padre Pio, not to worry but instead to pray.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 2914 West 44th St, Mpls. Friday, June 5th at 10:30am with visitation one hour prior followed by a luncheon in the school cafeteria. Internment at 1:30pm at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials preferred in Loi's name to: St. Joseph's Indian School. P.O. Box 100, Chamberlin, SD 57325-0100 or online at stjo.org.//flowers
