Listen to Obituary

born December 6, 1989, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away on September 17, 2025, at the age of 35.

Max is survived by his parents, Amy Wong and Ken Lai; his brother, Victor Lai; his sister, Amanda Lai; and brother-in-law, David Graveline. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Sing Wah Lai and Tsui Fong Cheng; his maternal grandparents, Samuel Wong and Julia Cheung; as well as his uncles, Sai Kit Chan and Andrew Wong.

Max will be remembered for his creative spirit, hardworking nature, and generous heart. From a young age, he discovered a passion for both cooking and music. Growing up, he honed his culinary skills working in local restaurants while also teaching himself to play the guitar. His love for food led him to pursue formal training at Le Cordon Bleu, launching a culinary career that spanned more than 15 years in leadership roles across restaurants in Minneapolis and Raleigh, North Carolina. Known for his culinary talent and dedication, he had a special gift for sushi and shared his love of food with both family, friends, and the community.

Beyond the kitchen, Max was a talented musician with a treasured collection of guitars. He was deeply caring and always ready to lend a hand, whether supporting coworkers in the kitchen or preparing meals for charity during the height of the pandemic. His adventurous spirit took him across the world, with travels to places such as Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, and France. His compassionate nature shone through in his love for animals, especially his beloved dog, Daisy.

In remembrance of Max, and in honor of his love for Daisy, the family kindly asks that any memorial donations be made to the Animal Humane Society.
