Michael Gordon James

Michael Gordon James, 77, of Crystal MN, passed away in his home on September 5, 2026. Mike was a graduate of Robbinsdale Cooper High School and served during the Vietnam War. He is survived by daughters, Tressa (Mike), Nadine (Brian); grandchildren, Claire, Ann, and Lyle; friend and former spouse, Sandy; sister Julie; nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by parents Gordon and Colleen James (Ryan), and nephew John "Buddy" Sahlen.

Shortly after high school, he was drafted into the Army. He held the rank of Sergeant in the 23rd Infantry Division ("Americal Division"). He proudly wore a Vietnam Veteran cap highlighting this important component of his identity and will be laid to rest amongst his military peers and family in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Mike was passionate about automobiles from an early age, noting that "I have been changing oil in cars before I was even able to get a drivers license". He worked as a service advisor at Minar Ford and Brookdale Ford for many years and was a proud member of the Teamster's Union. His enthusiasm for cars never wavered as he restored and maintained several vehicles, drove a vintage Ford Escort from the 1980's, and attended local car shows throughout the summer months. His passion for machinery was not limited to automobiles. He drove a tractor for his neighborhood hayrides, and frequently attended thrashing shows highlighting antique tractors, steam engines, and tractor pulls. In addition to a love of tinkering with machinery, Mike enjoyed carpentry and doing home renovation himself.

He had an abundance of passions which included his love for summer nights, music from the 60's and 70's, and vanilla ice cream. Fishing and hunting were among hobbies he enjoyed. When the fish weren't biting he often remarked that "a bad day fishing was better than a good day at work". Mike valued community events and time with his family, neighbors, and friends. He loved fireworks and parades, with marching bands being his favorite component. His preferred season was fall as he enjoyed the changing of the leaves, apple orchards, and his favorite two apples; Haralson and Honeycrisps.

Mike was extremely fond of his grandchildren. He enjoyed going to their sporting events, taking them to the zoo, fishing, and trips to the park.

Those who knew Mike will remember his helpfulness, sense of humor, and patriotism. Described as "salt of the earth" by his grandmother, he was dependable, hardworking, and genuine. He will be greatly missed.
