Norvin Allen Stiyer, age 87, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosalie. Norvin is survived by his children: Mark, Thomas, Suz, and Michael, along with their spouses and five cherished grandchildren.
Norvin, known to family and friends as Norv, grew up in Mahnomen, MN, where he spent his childhood and helped his father manage the farm, taking pride in hard work and responsibility. He attended school in North Dakota. He was also active in the ROTC program.
After graduating, Norv moved to Minneapolis and began his career at Soo Line Railroad. He worked in the machinery management, IT, and payroll departments for 35 years. Norv and Rosalie’s story began on the bus, or more precisely, at the bus stop. Their daily conversations blossomed into a friendship, and soon they discovered they both worked at Soo Line. By chance, even after moving to different apartments, they continued to cross paths on the same bus, just one stop apart. Their connection was undeniable, and soon they married. Their family quickly grew with the birth of their first child, Mark, followed by Tom, Suz, and Michael. Rosalie chose to dedicate herself to raising their children, leaving her job at Soo Line. Norv was a devoted father, always making sure his family was cared for, whether by fixing something around the house or providing support and love.
Family gatherings during the holidays were a source of great joy for Norv. He loved seeing and talking to everyone. Often, Norv would have to go find Rosie repeatedly when they already had their coats on ready to leave. He’d lose her in the shuffle because she’d start a new conversion with someone else. Norv’s grandchildren were especially dear to him; he took great pleasure in watching them participate in their activities and spending quality time together.
Norv and Rosalie enjoyed an active social life together. They participated in a bowling league, a card club, The Rockers choir, and golf leagues. Both were active in their church community, singing in the choir and spending time with church friends. Norv was always ready to lend a helping hand, volunteering for various charitable organizations and putting others before himself.
Norv and Rosalie spent several winter months each year in Florida, enjoying golf, walks on the beach, and dinners out. Norv continued to give generously of his time, volunteering and remaining active in the lives of family and friends.
Norv’s legacy lives on in his family and friends, who remember him as a loving father, devoted husband, and generous friend. His kindness, humor, and unwavering support touched everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
Norvin Allen Stiyer will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
