Phil was born in Willmar and grew up on his family's farm near Big Kandiyohi Lake. His family attended Svea Lutheran Church and Phil fondly remembered Svea community events such as picnics, tug-of-war competitions, and softball tournaments. He attended Willmar High School (Class of 1959) where he excelled in math and played offensive and defensive tackle for three undefeated seasons on the Willmar football team, earning all-conference honors in his senior year. Phil attended the University of Minnesota and started his career as a production engineer for Honeywell in Golden Valley, where he worked for over 30 years.
Phil married Barbara in 1963 and they remained devoted to each other for the rest of his life. They raised their four children in their house in St. Louis Park where they lived together for nearly 60 years, significantly improving their house with home improvement and gardening projects, many of them Phil built himself. They were very supportive of their children, including working hard on the challenges of having a child with Down syndrome, and together raised a very close family. He and Barb enjoyed traveling, including driving trips and overseas tours, and attending their children's athletic and academic events.
Phil enjoyed interacting with the community. He and Barb were parishioners at St. Therese of Deephaven Catholic Church. They enjoyed walking on the bike paths and greeting people they met. Phil golfed weekly with a regular group of friends and played third base for the Reiss's softball team at Aquila Park for many years. He was a Vikings fan and season ticket holder since 1970 in Met Stadium. Phil and Barb volunteered in the community, including maintaining the gardens at Aquila Park, driving for STEP, helping at Special Olympics events, and working as an election judge. Those lucky to have met Phil will remember him as a positive and supportive person who accepted people for who they are.
