Richard Koerselman, 81 of Medina, MN peacefully went to heaven to be with Jesus on May 6, 2025. He was born on November 19, 1943, on a farm in Hull, IA to Gerrit and Sophia (Vander Wilt) Koerselman, the youngest of four children. He grew up in the area and attended a one room country school, followed by Boyden-Hull High School where he met and fell in love with Faye Siderius. Following high school, he attended Northwestern College for two years. Richard and Faye were then married on June 2, 1964, and moved to Holland, Michigan where Richard finished his undergraduate degree in music at Hope College. Having had a strong calling to serve the Lord, Richard completed his degree in Theology at Western Theological Seminary, and later received a Masters in Guidance and Counseling.
Richard and Faye moved to Ridgefield Park, NJ where Richard was Pastor of a small church that was part of the Reformed Church in America for 9 years. During that time, they welcomed their daughter Sherri, and son Steve, into their lives. Richard continued serving the Lord in ministry with a new church start in Dallas, TX where they lived for 9 years.
Richard and his family moved to Gilbert, AZ and began the adventure of another new church start with New Hope Community Church. They made Arizona their home for 37 years where Richard eventually retired from New Hope at age 65. He was a highly respected Pastor in the community and known for his love to preach the word of God. After retirement, Richard was frequently asked to guest preach all over the valley. Richard also began serving at Falconer Funeral Home as Chaplin, conducting funeral services and offering aftercare funeral plans. After a couple years, Richard was asked to lead the congregation at Sunland Village East Chapel in Mesa, AZ. He served as the Chapel Pastor for 11 years and led weekly bible studies and participated in the church choir with his wife Faye, before retiring again at age 78. Richard's love for the Lord and people was deeply felt by everyone he encountered.
Richard loved his family with his whole heart and made them his top priority in his life. Time spent with family was some of Richard's most treasured moments. His love for his sweetheart, Faye never wavered and was a wonderful example for us all! Richard also loved adventure. He and Faye traveled the world, visiting many countries where they experienced new cultures and learned about many different traditions. Richard even conducted a marriage for a close friend in the Philippines.
Richard and Faye moved to Minnesota in November 2024 to be closer to family and receive the care they needed. Richard fought a several year battle with Alzheimer's disease and was surrounded by family and friends to support him during this time. He showed incredible strength and humility while facing some of his life's biggest health challenges. He was comforted in knowing that his family was always there to love and support him no matter what, and most importantly, that he had Jesus' saving grace in the end!
Richard will forever be remembered as a faithful and humble servant of Christ, loving husband, incredible father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend and pastor. He loved the Lord with all his heart, mind and soul and it was evident in how he lived his life. Richard loved music and as anyone who heard his sermons would attest, he loved a good joke. He will be deeply missed. While our hearts ache that he is no longer with us, our souls rejoice in the Lord, because we serve a living God who called Richard by name, to come home and be with Jesus for eternity!
Richard is survived by his wife, Faye; daughter, Sherri (Koerselman) Hubbard; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Melody (Busch) Koerselman; grandchildren, Caitlin Hubbard (Tyler Crump), Austin Hubbard (Cheyenne Bell), Yane Jordan, Anthony Gualtieri and Sophia Gualtieri; great-grandchildren, Jameson Crump, Kohenn Hubbard and Baker Crump; brother, Ben Koerselman; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Rensink and Beth Geense; brother-in-law, Paul DeGroot; many nieces and nephews.
