Stephen J. Franta, age 84, of Medina, passed away peacefully at home on September 15, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Steve was born on February 16, 1941, in New Ulm, Minnesota, to Herbert and Katherine Franta. He graduated with a business degree from the University of Minnesota. He was a loving husband and father and a kind-hearted friend to many, always willing to help others in need.
Steve pursued many business ventures and went on to found Canvas Craft in 1988. A lifelong craftsman and innovator, he stayed busy with countless projects, including remodeling and even constructing his own cabin. He had a love for trains, planes, and automobiles, as well as traveling, camping, enjoying the outdoors, and caring for animals. He also had a great sense of humor and enjoyed history, especially U.S. history.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Katherine, and his brothers, Herbert Jr. and Frank.
He is survived by his wife, Jeane, and their two daughters, Calli Franta (James) and Ashley Franta (Shane). He is also survived by his first wife, Kathryn (Herbeck) Franta, and their four children: Stephanie Scerbak, Christine Carrier (Greg), Matthew Franta (Melissa), and Nancy Mir (Tamas). He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; his brother, David Franta (Laura); as well as many other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 26, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 155 County Road 24, Medina, with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM. Interment and luncheon to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Opportunities Partners, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing the employment of those with disabilities. Donations may be made in memory of Steve Franta.
