V. David Schwantes was born in New Ulm, Minnesota, on August 4, 1940 to Vernie and Marie (Smasal) Schwantes. He passed away at home, surrounded by his family, on June 16, 2026.
David lived a life rich in purpose, defined by his love for his family, the outdoors, music, and a lifelong passion for reading and learning. His achievements were vast and varied. David served as an Eagle Scout, a correctional center mentor, a Marine corp sergeant, a corporate executive, an author, an adjunct professor, a board member, a certified financial planner, and much more. Above all, he was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, admired by many for his intellect, thoughtful opinions, sharp observations, and keen sense of humor.
David attended Dartmouth College and the Amos Tuck School of Business on an academic scholarship and later earned his MS in Finance from the University of Minnesota. Over his distinguished career, he held leadership roles including Divisional Controller at Pillsbury, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Medtronic, President and General Manager at Vision-Ease, and Chief Financial Officer at St. Mary's Medical Center. After a trip to Guatemala, David wrote: Guatemala: A Cry From the Heart. An avid thinker and writer he also authored: Finding Happiness Through Truth, Beauty and Ethics, and Ethics in a Cocoon: How (Not) to Live Well Together.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret; his sons, Steven (Gerri) and David Robert; and his grandsons, Matthew and David.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church (Wayzata, MN) on Wednesday, June 24th, with a visitation at 10:00 AM and Mass at 11:00 AM. Lunch will be served following the service.
