James Anthony Joranger, age 90, passed away in New Hope, Minnesota on Saturday, August 26, 2023. A long-time teacher and coach at Benilde-St. Margaret's High School in St. Louis Park, he was admired by students, colleagues, and friends for his thoughtful, generous nature. James, better known as Jim, valued respect across differences and was considerate to everyone from other golfers on the green to his caregivers during the last years of his life, never omitting a genuine thank you. To his family he was a steadfast and comforting presence who always showed up, ready to dissect the latest Twins game, jump into a bout of humor, or simply bring his warmth to a meal.
Jim is survived by children Mary (Dale) Neraasen, Mike (Ann) Joranger, and James Joranger; by son-in-law Steve Himmel; by grandchildren Max (Katie), Anna (Blake), Peter (Aileen), Abbie, Ted (Nicole), Gunnar, and Scott; and by great-grandchildren Emmett and Wes. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Gail (Sweeney) Joranger, and his daughter, Donna (Joranger) Himmel.
He will be missed by many and remembered with love. Mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 1, at the Church of St. Alphonsus, 7025 Halifax Ave N. in Brooklyn Center. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before Mass, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made out to Benilde-St. Margaret’s School.
