Philip James Worrell

Dr. Philip James Worrell, age 86, of Golden Valley. Loving husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully on June 3, 2019 after a brief battle with cancer.

Preceded in death by parents Harold and Helen, sister Kathryn Coyne.

Survived by his wife of 63 years, Anne; sons TJ (Jean), John (Tammy), and David (Roberta); granddaughters Hannah and Sophie; grandsons Thomas and Daniel; niece Nancy Thurlow, and other extended family.

Phil was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, assigned to the Pacific Ocean Fleet and then the Naval Station Great Lakes. He graduated from the U of M, completed his military service, and then returned to the Twin Cities to attend U of M Medical School. After receiving his M.D., Phil started a 50+ year career as a family physician, providing care for thousands of appreciative patients. Board-Certified in Family Practice, Phil served as Chief of Staff at both Glenwood Hills and North Memorial hospitals.

Although Phil enjoyed traveling to many faraway places with Anne, including four total solar eclipses, canoeing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and skiing in the Rocky Mountains were his special getaways. He especially looked forward to what became 50 consecutive annual wilderness adventures with the same group of men.

Phil sang with the Spirit of Hope church choir and often spent Saturday afternoons listening to radio broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera House. Phil was a camper, canoe guide, and board member at YMCA Camp Menogyn, a wilderness canoe base located on the Gunflint Trail.

The family would like to express its appreciation for the loving care and assistance provided by North Memorial Hospice, especially Lou, and the staff at J.A. Wedum Residential Hospice.

Memorials preferred to Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church or YMCA Camp Menogyn (NW 5901, P.O. Box 1450, Minneapolis, MN 55485-5901).

He left the campsite better than he found it.
